Home-made gatorade.

I just found my perfect formula for a home-made sports drink for long runs. It's somewhere between regular Gatorade and professional Gatorade in terms of electrolytes, with about the same calories.

In a 1/2 liter bottle of water I put:
- 2 tsp table sugar, which is 30 calories.
- 2 tbsp (1/8 cup) dextrose (aka glucose, aka corn sugar). which is 72 calories.
- 1/8 tsp salt , which is 290 mg sodium.
- 1 crushed Potassium Gluconate (550 mg) tablet, which has 90 mg potassium. (crush with spoon against a folded over paper towel)
- 1/4 tsp unsweetened drink mix (generic Kool aid), for flavor.

This is the same as I was using before, but with added calories. Since I was trying to lose weight, I previously only put 4 tsp of sugar (60 calories) in it. However, after I reached my goal weight, my muscles were so sore afterwards, I thought I was "hitting the wall" and maybe I was depleting glycogen stores.

I finished a 100 minute (1 hour 40 minute) workout, in which I ran 7 miles in 58 minutes, and biked 15.5 miles in 42 minutes. And the extra calories in the 4 bottles seemed to make a BIG difference in post-workout recovery. Hardly sore at all afterwards, and no soreness the next day either.

I also started taking a protein powder shake (26 g protein) after a workout, and I think that helps in post-workout recovery too.

The glucose/corn-sugar is absorbed faster than regular table sugar, since table sugar is 50% glucose and 50% fructose. The liver has to convert fructose to lipids (fat) before sending it out to the body to be burned. But glucose can go right to the bloodstream and to the muscles.

Dissolved glucose(dextrose) is less sweet and not as thick as dissolved table sugar, so it's easier to drink than straight sugar would be. And this custom mix has no glycerol or gum arabic like Gatorade.

I got the pure corn sugar for $1.25/pound at Great Fermentations on East 65th St., in Indy.

Important: Glucose (or even table sugar) is not something that should be taken in an amount greater than what is immediately used by the body, otherwise it triggers an insulin response. But... taking glucose in the middle of a strenuous workout, and in amounts LESS than the rate at which your body is burning up glycogen (a stored form of glucose), means that any ingested amount goes straight to energy needs, or to replace glycogen stores being used up.

In other words, if you're burning 800 calories per hour during exercise, you can probably safely ingest up to 400 calories worth of glucose per hour.

Make your own oat flour.

Rolled oats are cheap. Cheaper per pound than oat flour. So I use a little $12 coffee grinder (spice grinder) to make the flour as I need it. It works for me.

Make your own popcorn salt.

Popcorn salt is like regular table salt, except the grains are smaller than normal table salt.

This is because the salt doesn't dissolve on popcorn like it does when you use it to cook stuff. So it takes less salt to give popcorn its salty flavor.

Popcorn salt is much more expensive per pound than regular salt. Why? I don't know.

I bought some butter-flavored salt when it was on sale at Kroger, it has regular sized grains, not popcorn salt. So it adds too much salt when you sprinkle it on popcorn.

I had an idea to grind the salt smaller in a coffee grinder. It's an electric thingee, also called a spice grinder.

It worked.

Actually, the salt came out as a powder, so maybe I ground it too long. It doesn't flow as freely as store-bought popcorn salt. But it works. I ground all the butter-flavored salt, and put it back in the shaker/container, and it works.

Here's the little $12 coffee/spice grinder that I used:

Why aren't they talking about Obama's lack of "gravitas" ?

The talking heads (pundits and tv anchors) mocked George W. Bush for not having "gravitas".

For crying out loud, Bush had much more dignity and seriousness than Obama. Why is everyone silent about "gravitas" now?

I'd rather have Bill Clinton back in office than Obambi.

Google is like Skynet (from Terminator movie).

I really thought of this on my own. Honest. Then I "googled" it.

I'm not the first to make the connection.
